Reading With Pictures: A Seminar on Comics in the (Academic) Classroom

Josh Elder, an award-winning graphic novelist, “Comics Ambassador” for the US State Department and founder of the nonprofit literacy organization Reading With Pictures, will discuss how comics and graphic novels can enhance student engagement, improve the efficiency of instruction and increase overall educational efficacy in virtually any subject.

Joost Swarte Exhibition at Cartoonmuseum Basel

“The internationally renowned Dutch artist and designer Joost Swarte (born 1947) is one of the most important comic book artists of today – and enjoys long-standing cult status, especially in the Netherlands and in France.
Joost Swarte works in a variety of disciplines. His irrepressible appetite for creativity and storytelling usually starts out with a drawing – but more often than not it doesn’t end there. In addition to a wide variety of comics, illustrations and posters you can find stained-glass windows, fonts, objects, glasses, furniture or architecture among his works. All of Swarte’s art, be it graphic or three-dimensional, can be identified by its bold and clear characteristics, with its geometrical basic forms, its precise style, its monochrome rich colours and a subtle sense of irony. Swarte’s enormous knowledge of the shape and form of things shines through everything he does, and no wonder: Swarte studied industrial design, and cites De Stijl, Bauhaus, Streamline Modern, Memphis, and other styles with great pleasure and virtuosity. The exhibition was created in close collaboration with Joost Swarte and shows not only original drawings as well as numerous objects from all phases of the artist’s career.
Joost Swarte became internationally known in the 1980s with a style clearly inspired by Underground and Hergé’s Ligne claire. Swarte published regularly in established magazines such as “RAW” and “The New Yorker”. He himself was publisher of the comic magazine “Modern Paper” and was founder of the Dutch “Stripdagen Haarlem” comic festival. Together with the architectural company Mecanoo, Swarte designed the theatre building De Toneelschuur in Haarlem and sketched the design for the Musée Hergé in Louvain-la-Neuve (BE). In 2004 he was honoured with the title of Officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau by the Dutch Queen Beatrix.”

In 2013, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom organised the International Comics Competition “Animate Europe” for the first time. 2015 it will see a second edition, starting now.

“Up to the present day translation studies have paid little attention to Comics. There are many possible reasons for this. Research within the discipline has for a long time almost exclusively focused on verbal texts. On one hand, since the 1990s it had devoted more attention to audio-visual texts, but a clear emphasis has been with those inter- and intra-lingual forms of translation which are required by films. On the other hand it is much harder to differentiate comics clearly from other text types, regardless of whether comics are seen as a genre, a distinct communication medium or as a hybrid collection of signs. Finally, comics have been regarded – especially in Germany – as unserious, and this undoubtedly has meant that they have been discussed in peripheral areas of literary criticism, media science and translation studies.

We intend in this conference to work with a broad concept of translation: one which embraces both inter-lingual and inter-semiotic aspects of translation. To translate comics from one language and culture into another almost invariably involves the adaptation of non-verbal and para-verbal elements. This is particularly evident both in the increasingly common practice of adapting comics across medium and across genre – as film, video game, radio play, stage play – and in the corresponding practice of adapting literary sources as comics, usually with the label Graphic Novel. In these processes, inter-lingual and inter-semiotic translation goes hand in hand with those adaptation processes which are a necessary part of changing medium or genre.”
