Who We Are
The Visual Culture area of the PCA/ACA Conference is a vibrant and growing contributor to the national conference and encourages presentations, papers and panels (as well as other modes of dissemination of scholarship) in traditional, non-traditional, and emerging areas of study. We invite proposals from academics, non-academics, students and scholars at all stages of their careers and have found the Visual Culture area serves as a place of robust exchange and networking. For undergraduate students considering submissions, please ensure you are acquainted with the Undergraduate Policy of the Visual Culture Area prior to submission.
What We’re Looking For
We are currently seeking proposals for panel sessions and individual presentations that engage with issues, ideas, and practices related to visual culture broadly defined, including but not limited to:
- Traditions and conventions associated with visual culture
- Studio art practices and theories
- Image-focused theory
- Interdisciplinarity, transdisciplinarity, and intermedia as they inform visual culture
- Architecture and the built environment
- Art history and theory (all periods)
- Photography and lens-based media
- Journalism and photojournalism (television and print media)
- Film and cinematic culture
- Public art and guerrilla practices (graffiti, murals, public commissions and installations)
- New media and computer-based issues in visual culture
- Advertising
- Graphic design
- Design thinking
- Design history and theory
- Comparative studies and multiculturalism in visual culture(s)
- Visual culture and the subversion of grand narratives
- Modes and ways of seeing, “reading” and experiencing the visual
- Verbal, visual, and performative relationships
- Iconographic studies
- Aesthetics
How to Get Started
Interested individuals should submit an abstract of no more than 250 words (including presentation title) for their proposed panel or paper and provide all requested contact details via the PCA/ACA online presentation submission portal, which can be found at: http://conference.pcaaca.org. DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS FEBRUARY 28, 2021.
